Information Sheet 1.3
Lesson: Assemble computer hardware
Lesson: Input and Output Devices
I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define input and output devices.
- Identify common input and output devices.
- Explain the functions of each device.
- Differentiate input devices from output devices.
- Appreciate the importance of these devices in computer operations.
What is Input and Output Devices?
An input device is a piece of hardware that allows users to enter data and commands into a computer. These devices enable interaction with the computer system and facilitate the processing of information.
| Common Input Devices | Image |
|---|---|
| Keyboard: Used for typing text and commands. | |
| Mouse: A pointing device used to interact with the graphical user interface. | ![]() |
| Scanner: Converts physical documents into digital format. | |
| Microphone: Captures audio input for communication or recording. | |
| Webcam: Captures video input for video conferencing and streaming. |
| Common Output Devices | Image | |

|
| Printer:A printer is a peripheral machine which makes a durable representation of graphics or text, usually on paper. While most output is human-readable, bar code printers are an example of an expanded use for printers. Different types of printers include 3D printers, inkjet printers, laser printers, and thermal printers. | ![]() |

| Projector: Displays computer output on a larger screen for presentations. | ||
Difference between Input and Output Devices
| Aspect | Input Devices | Output Devices |
|---|---|---|
| Function | Allow users to enter data and commands into the computer. | Allow the computer to communicate information back to the user. |
| Direction of Data Flow | Data flows from the user to the computer. | Data flows from the computer to the user. |
| Examples | Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Microphone, Webcam | Monitor, Printer, Speakers, Projector |
Importance of Input and Output Devices
Input and output devices are essential for the operation of a computer system. They enable users to interact with the computer, provide data for processing, and receive feedback from the computer. Without these devices, computers would be unable to perform their intended functions effectively.
